GREAT OPENING!

We had a great opening night. It was a small house but hopefully more people will hear about it and come see the show. Everyone is doing a great job. I'm so proud of them all. I know what it's like to have those opening night jitters when the critics are there and the whole show takes on a journey in front of an audience. Oh, how I love the theatre! I have worked so hard to get everything done on time and I think I have done my task. I look forward to a little less stress in the coming days and of course my first rehearsal at Bus Barn this Saturday. Yahoo!! (not the website, just the expression =+)

CAREFUL THE THINGS YOU SAY

I'm up late working on last minute things for the show. I can't wait until tomorrow is OVER! Opening nights are a bit crazy for assistant directors. My wonderful boss is a bit of a worrier, so I hope she doesn't rub that off on me. We can't BOTH of us be freaking out! The last dress rehearsal tonight was great. I'm really excited for them. I am really glad I was able to work in this capacity (and get paid!)

I was thinking about something cool to say to the cast besides the usual opening night "pep talk" and it made me think about my last directorial effort which was a concert called "DivaFest" in which I coached & accompanied some great female singers in a Broadway-themed concert. Since I was directing the show & playing the piano I was a bit of nervous mess. Usually a director tells their cast how wonderful they are and encourages them to do well. I remember being so frazzled that the only thing I remember telling them was "NOBODY F@!# UP!" =+) Ha!

Speaking of getting paid, I have the BEST gossip!.....wait a minute, this is on the INTERNET! I can't possibly write things that could come back to haunt me! I wish some people thought that BEFORE they wrote in their blogs & live journals.

"Careful the things you say, children will listen..."

ANOTHER OPENING NIGHT

I've been so busy this week getting the show ready to open for tomorrow night. I forgot how much work doing behind the scenes work can be. It's been a daunting task! Tomorrow is opening night. The cast & crew are ready (even I take a small part in the show: I do a voice-over in "Soldado Razo" & I from backstage I recite a poem in Spanish while the "Poetry" cast translates it to English." It should be a most exciting night!) Remember you can see the show for $5 if you mention the discount: "E-Savers or Artsopolis." Once again, the show opens tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. It closes on April 10th. For more information go to www.canadacollege.edu

AWESOME "NUNSENSE!"

You know, I was really not looking forward to see a musical about 5 singing nuns, but since I had friends in it, I had to see it. Holy cow!! The show was incredible! Of course I am biased that my friends Erica, Tracy & Patti were in it but I had the best time. They were hysterically funny and each shined in their "big" solo numbers. Tracy stole the show with her Act II gospel number. I was so glad to see it. They play one more weeked at Coastal Rep in Half Moon Bay. GO SEE THEM!

This week is "Hell Week" with the play at school, so I won't have much time to write. Rehearsals for "World" start on Saturday - I CAN'T WAIT!!!

STARRY, STARRY NIGHT

Tonight I went to see Theatreworks's production of Vincent in Brixton and it was brilliant. I highly recommend it just for the pleasure of Gloria Biegler & Jacob Blumer's performances. Just amazing. I also caught up with an old friend of mine, Ms. Heather Clemens who is once again knocking them dead as the divine Diva at Teatro Zinzanni in San Francisco. I saw the show a few months ago and it was incredible and she is amazing. Heather says the show is better than ever, so check it out. You'll have a fab evening.

ANOTHER "SWEENEY" REVIEW

Even though we've closed, here's Judy Richter's fab review of the show. You can also see it at www.aislesay.com

AISLE SAY San Francisco
SWEENEY TODD
Music and Lyrics by Stephen SondheimBook by Hugh WheelerDirected by Jay ManleyPresented by Foothill Music TheatreAt Foothill College PlayhouseFoothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Alto Hills, CA / (650) 949-7360
Reviewed by Judy Richter
It has been more than a quarter-century since Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" opened on Broadway to critical acclaim as "a staggering theater spectacle and more fun than a graveyard on the night of the annual skeleton's ball," according to Douglas Watt in the New York Daily News. As originally directed by Harold Prince, it was indeed a spectacle with its massive set, constructed from an old foundry from Rhode Island, and its large cast. It won eight Tonys, including Best Musical.
Over the years, it has seen numerous touring and regional theater productions. The San Francisco Symphony did a memorable 2001 concert version with George Hearn as Sweeney Todd, Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett, Lisa Vroman as Johanna, Davis Gaines as Anthony, and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. This production was videotaped for a later TV broadcast.
Now Foothill Music Theatre and its ever-resourceful director, Jay Manley, have taken on the challenges of this masterful musical and have proved once again how great the show is and how amazing this college-community company is. Moreover, FMT is staging it in its intimate Playhouse, which often puts the performers within literal reach of the audience. However, thanks to Joe Ragey's flexible set and Kurt Landisman's lighting design, along with Manley's direction and Joe Duffy's musical staging, the show works in this small space yet seems as grand as earlier versions. Costumes are by Amy Zsadanyi-Yale.
Based on Christopher Bond's adaptation of an old English thriller, which in turn was based on a true story, "Sweeney Todd" takes place in 18th century London. A barber, Sweeney Todd (James Monroe Iglehart), has escaped from a penal colony in Australia, where he was sentenced by the venal Judge Turpin (Mike R. Padilla), who lusted after the barber's wife and took in their infant daughter as his ward. Seeking revenge against the judge, Sweeney sets up shop above the pie shop of his former landlady, Mrs. Lovett (Diana Torres Koss). After missing a chance to kill the judge while shaving him, Sweeney embarks on a murderous spree that finds him slitting the throats of many of his customers and sending them tumbling into Mrs. Lovett's bakehouse, where they're converted into meat pies.
Horrible as this premise may be, Wheeler's book gives it a Dickensian flavor with implicit commentary on the plight of the lower classes during that time, and Sondheim gives it such a brilliant score and complex lyrics that the show takes on operatic proportions. He infuses it with arias that range from the hauntingly beautiful "Johanna," sung by Austin Ku as Anthony Hope, the sailor who befriends Sweeney and falls in love with his daughter, to the soaring "Epiphany," sung by Iglehart as Sweeney.
Then there are duets such as "Pretty Women," sung by Iglehart and Padilla, and "Not While I'm Around," sung by Koss and Sean Patrick O'Connor as Tobias, Mrs. Lovett's young assistant, as well as larger ensembles such as "Quartet," sung by Padilla, Ku, Keite Davis as Johanna and Martin Rojas-Dietrich as Beadle Bamford, the judge's henchman. Choruses include the dramatic "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and "City on Fire." On a lighter note, there are the pun-filled "Priest," sung by Iglehart and Koss, "By the Sea" and "The Worst Pies in London," both sung by Koss.
The entire ensemble is excellent in the choral numbers, showing careful attention to diction, a credit to musical director-keyboardist Brandon Adams, who also conducts the five-person orchestra. Each person in the ensemble also creates realistic characters who stay fully involved, adding to the show's drama.
Manley has assembled a terrific cast, led by Iglehart as a formidable Sweeney and Koss as the wily Mrs. Lovett. Both are Equity guest artists. Ku as Anthony, Davis as Johanna, Padilla as the judge, Rojas-Dietrich as Beadle and O'Connor as Tobias also sing and act on a professional level. Also noteworthy are Lane McKenna as the crazed Beggar Woman and Joe Colletti as Adolfo Pirelli, barber and seller of a hair potion, extolled and condemned in "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir."
And so with "Sweeney Todd," Manley and his compatriots add to their impressive list of musical theater accomplishments.

I wasn't able to do much this weekend as my Mom's health is in poor condition. We're all in good spirits that she will make a speedy recovery. I'm going to try to see some shows this weekend. Hope all is well with everyone.

SPRING BREAK...HERE I COME!

After tomorrow night's tech rehearsal for the play at Cañada, I will finally get the chance to have a little rest! This week has been crazy with school & rehearsals. I'm so tired, I mistook a joke completely today and wound up blowing up over nothing. I've never been this tired in my life! I'm looking forward in seeing Nunsense this weekend. I've never seen it before and it should be fun! I feel silly writing in this blog since there's nothing exciting going on right now. But hey - thanks for reading!

Ciao!

UPCOMING STUFF

I felt no guilt about sleeping in today and ditching school. This is not a disco body and it was tired! =+) I'll be busy this week with rehearsals for the production at Cañada and then I get a week off for spring break. I start rehearsals for The World Goes Round on April 2nd. I'm so excited!! It will be nice to have a couple of weeks of vocal rest. My friends Erica Wyman (now Abrahamson) & Patti Appel (Sally & Schneider in Cabaret at BBBAY) are in a production of Nunsense at Coastal Repertory Theatre which runs till April 2nd. I will be going to see that this weekend. Some of my Sweeney cast mates already have great projects lined up and if you get the chance, check them out:

Ruth E. Mullins & Sean O'Connor (Toby) will be appearing in 42nd Street with Sunnyvale Players

Keite Davis (Johanna) will be rocking the house in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Rose & Crown in Palo Alto on March 23 & 30 and April 6 & 13 at 8 P.M.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON...AND CLOSE!

Wow! What a day! We had our final performance of Sweeney today. Austin, our wonderful "Anthony", lost his voice and Nick (his understudy) had to go on for him. The understudies had NO rehearsal time, but Nick, was BRILLIANT! I was a little worried about what would happen, but he nailed everything. It gave us (the cast) an amazing energy throughout the show and I have never seen the cast so together, cheering another cast member on and also each other. We wanted to end this show in a blaze of glory. It was a great closing show. I must say that the rehearsal period for this show, was one of the most difficult I have ever endured. I quit smoking to do this show (4 months on March 15th!) and started working on the score as soon as I got the part. The score is HARD! The lyrics, rhythms, timing, cut-offs, diction, high notes! So much work, and then also finding the character, who was he? It took me a long time to find my interpretation. I finally found out that the Beadle could be quite funny and I hope he was; and there was other stuff as well; however the end result was pure magic. I am going to miss my castmates and production team and most of all this devil-icious character I created. Playing the Beadle was one of the most wonderful times I have ever had onstage. (having scenes with the amazing Diana & James didn't hurt either) I would like to thank everyone who came to see it, the critics for recognizing my work, Jay for his amazing vision and for trusting me with the role, my pal Joe for putting up with me and for his helping & guiding hand in the role, Brandon for his patience and his brilliant musicianship, Linda for being an awesome stage manager, Amy for giving me that kick-ass costume and the entire cast for their humor, talent & awesome work. I love you all and I will always treasure milling about in "Fleet Street."

With SO MUCH love,

Martin

"PASSION" on KQED

Without a doubt, my favorite work done by Stephen Sondheim is Passion. The music he wrote for the character of Fosca (originated by Donna Murphy) is heartbreaking. I think it is the most passionate & romantic score ever written for the stage. A few years ago, I was so overcome with emotions after seeing Theatreworks' production of Passion that I almost crashed my car in the parking lot. Every time I listen to it, it doesn't fail to move me. KQED will be airing a concert version with a dream cast. Here's the info:

Live from Lincoln Center: Stephen Sondheim's Passion Thu, Mar 31, 8pm KQED TV9
Tony Award-winners Audra McDonald, Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris star in this legendary musical theater piece. Lonny Price directs this semi-staged concert version, originally produced by the Ravinia Festival in 2003, with music by a 56-piece orchestra. The event will be presented live from the Rose Theater in the exciting new Frederick P. Rose Hall at the Time Warner Center in New York City. Based on the novel Fosca by Igino Tarchetti and the film Passion d'amore by Ettore Scola, Sondheim's Passion, with a book by James Lapine, explores love and obsession through the story of Giorgio (Cerveris), an officer in the 1863 Italian Army who carries on an affair through the mail with Clara (McDonald), a married woman. When Fosca (LuPone), the sickly, wretched sister of the colonel, becomes obsessed with Giorgio, her passion begins to eat at his soul until he gives in to her overpowering love.

I am a huge Donna Murphy fan, so it will be interesting to see what Ms. LuPone brings to the role. And Audra McDonald as Clara...I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. For all you theatre people, hopeless romantics and especially Sondheim fans, grab some kleenex & don't miss it.

ONE MORE REVIEW COMING

The Aisle Say review of Sweeney is coming soon. Since they haven't posted it on--line yet, I feel iffy about posting it here, but it should be up soon and as soon as it does I'll put the link here. The show is going great. Tonight we had a lot of actors in the audience and it was great to see them come out and support our show. We've had a couple of great shows these past two nights and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's matinee and then of course a bit of vocal rest. You know, it's a funny thing, getting older. When I was younger I could sing in a show, go out and have fun and still have a voice to sing with the next day. With this show, none of that can happen. I have learned the importance of rest, both physical & vocal. I never realized how intricate & difficult the vocal demands of this show are. It's all about the music and doing the best to accommodate Sondheim's complex time signatures, rhythms and phrasing. Not to mention astronomical high notes. I wish I had Monday-Wednesday off, but I have to attend rehearsals for the show at Cañada. Like my friend Linda says "No rest for the wicked!"

ALL I CAN SAY IS: 'WOW!"

Tonight's show was interesting...I didn't hear one of my cues and was a little late for one of my entrances with Judge Turpin. Thank goodness pros like Diana & James were onstage and made it seem like nothing had happened. It was one of those "we in the cast know, but the audience doesn't" moments =+) Don't you just LOVE live theatre!? Aside that little incident, the show sounds & looks great and we had a very warm audience for a Thursday evening. I just read Richard Connema's review of our show and he really liked it. I was blown away with his praise & appreciation of how vocally demanding the role of the Beadle is. Thank you sir!!

Thankfully for Berle, I did not have to dance in this show =+) Congratulations!!

"AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND" BABY!!!

What a day! It was one of those days I'll always remember, because of the great news I received today. I have been cast in Bus Barn Stage Company's upcoming production of And The World Goes 'Round. I have wanted to do this show for years now!! I know a lot of actors who have worked at Bus Barn before and speak nothing but wonderful things of the company. I feel honored & proud to be making my debut there. I look forward in meeting and working with my new fellow company of acclaimed actors and getting the chance to work again with my fellow Sweeney cast mate Jennifer Oku and of course finally getting the opportunity to work with the talents of director Barbara Cannon and musical director Mark Hanson. I'm over the moon thrilled!!! AND As if that wasn't enough, I read an advance copy of critic Judy Richter's review of our production of Sweeney and it was a rave! She is a critic whose opinion I have always respected and to read her praise for me and my fellow actors, pushed the joy level to a maximum and brought me to tears. I don't usually cry unless something's really wrong, so to be able to cry for joy is a wonderful thing. My family loved seeing the show last week and I can't wait to go back to the theatre on Thursday and continue to play this delicious role.

I want to send a big kiss (MWAH!) to my friends at Sweeney who were nothing less than angels through this audition process for this new show, always encouraging me and sending positive thoughts my way. As Fraulein Schneider would say to Herr Schultz in Cabaret...."I am overwhelmed." I am indeed.

With love & joy,

Martin

P.S. Remember: - Sweeney closes on March 13 - DON'T MISS IT!!!
And The World Goes 'Round opens in May - more details to follow. =+)
